Year 11 Economics Tutoring | UAI 99.40 | 94 Econ | Eco/Law in Uni | UNSW Econ Tutor

Hi Everyone,

My name is Sam. I am starting an Economics Tutoring class for Year 11 students who are ready to conquer HSC Economics!

My Qualifications

In addition to achieving 94 in Economics for the HSC and a UAI (old school for ATAR) of 99.40 I have:

  • Completed a degree in Economics and Law from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) - graduating with Distinction in Economics (a 'High Distinction' average) and First Class Honours in Law (top 10% of the cohort)
  • Was appointed to tutor advanced economics courses as a 'Tutor in Charge' at UNSW - teaching Undergraduate and Masters University courses over the course of my degree
  • Was evaluated by my students at UNSW as scoring an average of 99% across all teaching metrics and have a number of my HSC and University students who will testify to my effective teaching style (see below)
  • Designed a HSC and Preliminary Economics tutoring syllabus and taught HSC Economics, 2 Unit and 3 Unit Mathematics at a well regarded tuition centre in Hurstville
  • Work as a Business Strategy Consultant advising the biggest companies in Australia - which means I live and breathe economics every working day!

My Teaching Style

HSC Economics is focused largely on three things:
  • Developing a conceptual understanding of economic principles
  • Having sufficient grasp of the syllabus content to solve problems
  • Communicating economic analysis effectively and structuring arguments based on economic principles by answering short answer and extended response

Accordingly my classes will be focused on getting students to excel at these three things. Each class is geared towards discussion of core economics concepts to develop a sufficient understanding so students will not have to 'go back to the textbook' to learn things that they have forgotten. Classes are given structure through course notes which are designed by me, leveraging both Riley's Economics textbooks, my HSC notes and my own additions from which are designed to tie the notes very closely to the structure of the syllabus.

This makes both following the class and revising for tests much easier! Each class also has an associated 'workbook' of questions that you will be expected to complete each week, which will develop your ability to answer multiple choice questions, short answer questions and eventually extended response. I have attached the notes and workbook for class 1 so you can have a look. Each class will involve a set of course notes which you will work to "fill out" during class. You will be given the "completed course notes" the following week so you can make sure you haven't missed anything.

My teaching style is informal and encourages student participation. I have found this to be the most effective way to create rapid understanding of course content and develop problem solving skills and getting students engaged. I have attached some of my UNSW tutor evaluations so that you can see what other people have said about me (remember, these were completely anonymous)!

Why only Year 11?

A common misconception is that "you don't need to know year 11 economics for year 12 economics" - this is definitely not true. The economic principles in Year 11 are essential for a thorough understanding of the year 12 topics: it is much easier to understand Inflation and Unemployment in the Year 12 'Economic Issues' topic with a thorough understanding of the price mechanism and Labour Markets which you learn in year 11. I would love the opportunity to teach students from the start to finish for HSC Economics because I believe my teaching will have the highest impact on students ability to excel in the HSC.

Where, when and how much will it cost, and how do I sign up?

Where: The class will be taught in a room at Homebush Boys High School
When: The first class will be on Sunday Morning, February 5 - very likely at 9am (time TBC). The classes will run for 90 minutes
How much?: Each class will cost $30 - which will cover printouts of the class notes, completed class notes and workbooks. The first two classes will be FREE OF CHARGE so that you can see whether or not it is right for you.

Give me a buzz on 0409 793 605, at samuel.sathiakumar@gmail.com or send me a PM if you are interested, have any further questions or would like to join the class!

Internal Transfer into UNSW Law/Comm

I'm going to spend my first year doing B Comm/Econ but I'm unsure about transferring into Law/Comm because I don't have insight into (and would like someone to fill me in on it)...

1) Difficulty of Law

2) What happens if I have not completed one core course in the commerce degree in my first year (because I chose to do an Econ core course first such as Macroeconomics 1)

3) Estimated WAM required

Thank you!

What is Arts at Uni like?

Does anyone know what sorts of exams or projects are there in Arts? Whether its easy or hard? Lot of writing and reading? Lots of memorisation?

I am keen on doing Arts as a double degree and I want to do in particular International Relations as a major. My first preference is Medicine/Arts at UNSW (only Uni that offers that combo) and if I don't get into Medicine at all at any other Uni then Commerce/Arts at UNSW/USYD/MQ.

About me: In 2010, I placed 2nd in NSW in Extension 2 English, receiving marks of 98/100 (Advanced), 48/50 (Extension) and 50/50 (Extension-2). For the past several years, I have taught at Dux College, Bondi Junction, using the latest materials from some of Sydney’s most prominent selective schools. Hello fellow peers ,

This post will be short and simple, not long and convoluted.
My name is Sam and I completed my HSC in 2016 achieving an ATAR of 96.65
I am currently tutoring students in

- Physics
- Chemistry
- Extension 1 maths
- Extension 2 maths

I have worked voluntarily as a teacher for over a year amidst other highly talented and experienced staff, achieving my visceral desire to improve and perfect my teaching technique. Throughout the year, I have noted any critiques and applied several points of feedback provided to me in order to fine tune my style of teaching.

Feedback from my current students is overwhelmingly supportive and all of them have notable improvements in their respective subject areas. I Firmly believe this to be a direct result of my long experience allowing me to combine extensive theory with a tactical and unique approach to questions and practical applications.

I will be tutoring students of all years at Liverpool library, Carnes hill library and through Skype
I am also able to travel to more distant students (at your convenience)

I am very flexible (location, timing, small class tuition with friends, free lessons etc), so feel free to text or call me on 0466115823 if you want to have a chat :)

Hey guys,

I'm going to be going into Year 11 this year and I'm currently on holiday right now.

I have an ambition of doing medicine and I was wondering, how can I begin studying for the UMAT?

I definitely have a lot of time on my hand and would like to use my time on trying to prepare for the UMAT (Yes, I know it's in the middle of Year 12 but, gotta start somewhere >.<)

Cheers!

Help-marking in chemistry?

$

i need help on what to do in regards to my chemistry teacher, my teacher seems to mark me down for stuff that isn't chemistry e.g.-

-lost marks because my writing is to small, even though every other kid in my class can read it and say its neat (lost 4 marks in one test 3 in another)

-lost marks because my diagram was to small, filled whole space available for the diagram (lost 1 mark in 2 separate tests)

-lost marks for punctuation/spelling, spelled Bunsen burner as Bunsen Burner (lost 1 mark for the capital letter)

I seem to be the only kid in the class losing marks for this stuff, now I'm in my HSC year I do not want it fucking with atar. Should I take future assessments to my teacher for remarking (he is somewhat patronizing about remarking though) or should i take them to bostes for remarking.

thanks

I plan on doing 2 subjects there meaning I need to make up/catch up on two subjects somewhere throughout by degree whether it be through overloading/extending my degree. I have these subjects left to do (in the picture below); can anyone who's been in the same boat/doing the same program and has been through exchange help me out?

Transferring with a combined degree

Let's say I have a b. science/b. arts and wanted to transfer into Law after a year.
I understand you need a certain WAM to be considered, would you need this WAM in both courses or just, for example, only in the arts degree and my WAM in the science degree wouldn't matter?

Can a few people please answer a few questions for my CAFS assignment?
